Author's Introduction:
This chapter is about how Lucky got his nickname, with points of view from different characters, including someone who has disappeared, a childhood friend who has been left behind, and an elderly relation on the other side of the world. It's a chapter that takes place outside of the "real" action of the novel, as these are all internal musings, albeit in a press interview or documentary format. It was a hard decision to sacrifice this chapter, but in the end I had to take it out, as it affected the pace at an important part of the novel. I had also overwritten, a mistake done, rather absurdly, by accidentally formatting the pages to include too much text when I first started writing. When the book was completed and re- formatted, I saw that I'd written thirty pages more than I needed, and frustratingly had to make some cuts. I have always liked the slight surrealism of this chapter, a moment when all characters past and present are brought together to focus on Lucky, and the insight it gives to their personal relationship with him. So I'm very glad to be able to present it on the website! I hope you enjoy it, and forgive the many (hopefully minor) errors, which are mine alone, as this chapter was never edited.
