A musical dilattante’s favourite tracks
O Mio Babbino Caro, from Gianni Schicchi, by Puccini:
Even people who don’t like classical music will recognise this one. It’s a beautiful aria, sad and warm and wonderful. My favourite version is the one by Kiri Te Kanawa; I think they used it on “Room with a View”, the Merchant Ivory production, so you might know it from that.
You’re Just Too Good To Be True, Andy Williams:
They should play this at every wedding, it’s a celebration song; it just makes you feel happy to be alive.
The Girl from Ipanema, Getz and Gilberto:
When I was first dating my wife, meeting up in secret at the tennis club and campus in Karachi, this song used to remind me of her; I thought of it every time I saw her in the distance, before she’d look over her shoulder, and start walking towards me.
Tears of a Clown, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles:
I always felt that this song was about me; I was the funny one, the one who made people laugh, and who was never quite taken seriously. But I guess if you choose to be a clown, you can’t honestly complain about being treated like one.
